Asbestos Causes Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. It is found in buildings, industrial and residential build before 2000. People in the building trade or in the navy for example are exposed to it more than other people. This is due to it being found in many materials used in the building trade. Asbestos was also used in Ships, Air planes and other Navy, Army vehicles.

Examples of the building trade are, pipe lagging, ceiling tiles, partition walls, insulation, even the toilet seat and cistern.

Mesothelioma takes a long time to develop, and doesn’t really show until the later stages. It takes between 20 to 50 years to be diagnosed as the disease can be mistaken for everyday ailments, e.g. coughing, tiredness, fever, muscle weakness. Mostly patients will be diagnosed after two to three months.

On average patients live between 4 and 11 months after being diagnosed with Mesothelioma Cancer. The Survival rate statistics show 40% of patients survive longer than a year, and 10% live longer than 5 years.

The main cause is from asbestos, there are three different versions of asbestos, Blue, Brown and white. All are banned from the UK but that didn’t happen until 1999 (Brown and Blue were banned earlier) Asbestos is made of tiny fibres which we can breath in, this gets into the lining of the lung (Pleura, Pleural mesothelioma) or in to the abdomen (Peritoneum, Peritoneal mesothelioma). Out of the two types mesothelioma develops in the Pleura more often than in the Peritoneum.

There are a number of trials been going on around the world. One story is about a woman who took part in a trail at  the National Institutes of Health involving an immunotherapy (treatment that uses your own immune system to fight cancer) called adoptive cell transfer (ACT). After two years and regular check-ups the 45 year old continues to make improvements with her tumours shrinking, “I am slowly coming back” said the 45 year old “…Life definitely doesn’t stop because you have cancer” This has led to researches starting clinical trails in other parts of the USA. Steven Rosenberg M.D. is directing one of the trials.

Other breakthroughs

There is a trail in France looking into combining Avastin (works by slowing and stopping blood vessels growing) with Cisplatin and Alimta.

Cisplatin is one if not the oldest chemotherapy drug. It works by forming a complex inside the cells which binds to the DNA. It causes the cell to to die.

Alimta works by stopping cells dividing.

The combination of Cisplatin and Alimta is the most effective chemotherapy treatment, this will be interesting to see the results. Researchers hope it will increase the survival rate and delay the cancer from spreading.

Command stands for (Control Of Mesothelioma with Maintenance Deactinib) which is a clinical trail testing Defactinib. A drug which targets cancer stem cells. 11 countries are involved.
